Lesson 02 · 15–20 minutes · 5–12 years
Why Does It Grow Into a Sunflower?
Supplies
- Children’s sunflower cups
- A sunflower seed and a bean or pea seed
- Optional: other seeds (pumpkin, etc.) and a magnifying glass
Opening
2 minutesGather the kids in a circle.
“Hey everyone! Did you bring your sunflower cups? Let’s see how they’re doing! Some of you have little sprouts already — look at that! Isn’t it incredible that something so tiny is already starting to wake up and grow? God is doing amazing things inside those cups right now!”
Interactive Teaching
7–8 minutesHold up a sunflower seed and a bean or pea seed. Ask: “How do we know this seed is going to grow into a sunflower and not a bean plant? How does the seed know what to become? Can it decide all by itself?”
First, does everybody know what instructions are? Let’s hear from a few of you — who wants to tell us what instructions mean?
“Perfect! Instructions are the special directions or steps that tell you exactly what to do. Inside every single seed is a secret, invisible code called DNA. It’s like God’s own tiny instruction book — written by the Creator Himself! This code is so amazing that scientists are still discovering how it works, but God designed it perfectly from the beginning.”
“Think about the birds for a minute — there are so many different kinds! Tiny hummingbirds that hover like magic and sip nectar, powerful eagles that soar high with huge wings, colorful parrots that can talk, and little sparrows that sing sweet songs. They’re all birds, but God gave each one completely different instructions in their DNA.”
“The DNA in this sunflower seed is like a special message that says, ‘Grow tall and strong with big, bright yellow flowers that turn toward the sun!’ The DNA in the bean seed has completely different instructions: ‘Grow pods full of beans!’ God put that special, miraculous code inside each seed so every plant knows exactly what it’s supposed to be. It’s not an accident or a guess — it’s God’s wonderful design!”
“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
— Psalm 139:14
Hands-On Activity
4–5 minutesLet the kids look at different seeds (sunflower, bean, pumpkin, etc.) and guess what each one will grow into. Use a magnifying glass if available: “Look closely — can you see any clues to the miracle inside?”
Closing
2 minutesJust like God put special instructions in every seed with wonder and purpose, He also put special instructions inside of you. You’re not an accident. God designed you on purpose with His amazing love and creativity!
Closing prayer
Lead the children, having them repeat after you.
Dear God,
Thank You for Your special instructions for all life on earth.
Thank You for the amazing diversity of life — the birds that fly, the fish that swim, the flowers that bloom in so many colors, and even us!
Help us to see Your wonder and praise You for how You made everything.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Take-home sheet
What I learned
Every seed has a special code inside called DNA. That’s how God tells the seed exactly what to grow into!
Care for the sunflower
- Keep watering your seed — it’s still very young
- Put your cup in a sunny spot
- Watch how your sunflower grows toward the light
Verse to remember
“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” — Psalm 139:14
My job this week
Notice whether your plant grows straight up or leans toward the window.
Parent note
Help your child observe how the plant grows toward the light. Talk about how we should also turn toward Jesus — the Light of the World.
