Planting the Seed – God Makes It Grow

Supplies

  • 1 small clear plastic cup per child
  • Potting soil
  • 1 sunflower seed per child
  • A little water
  • Optional: magnifying glass or spoon

Opening

2–3 minutes

Gather the kids in a circle. Hold up one sunflower seed between your fingers like it’s a tiny treasure.

“Boys and girls, look at this tiny little seed. It’s so small! If I closed my hand, you might think it disappeared. Does this seed look alive to you? … It looks quiet, like it’s sleeping… or maybe even dead. But guess what? Inside this tiny, sleepy seed is a secret miracle that only God can wake up!”

Pass one or two seeds around the circle so the kids can hold them gently.

“Feel how light and tiny it is? Now close your eyes for just a second and imagine… what do you think is hiding inside this little brown shell?”

Interactive Teaching

6–7 minutes

Hold up a clear cup of water. “Raise your hand if you’ve ever watered a plant before. What happens when a plant gets water? It drinks it up!”

“Water is actually pretty amazing. God made water out of two invisible things called hydrogen and oxygen — that’s why we call it H₂O. And this water that God made can actually bring life to a seed that looks like it’s sleeping!”

Hold the seed up again. “Now, can this tiny seed grow all by itself? Can it decide one day, ‘Hey, I think I’ll turn into a sunflower today!’? No! It needs help from God’s wonderful creation.”

“What do you think this seed needs to grow?” Let them guess: water, sun, dirt.

“Yes! It needs three special gifts from God’s creation: sunlight (that God made the sun to give us), water (that God made to give life), and good soil (that God made the earth from). We can plant the seed, but only God can make it grow.”

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease.”

— Genesis 8:22

Hands-On Activity

5–7 minutes

Give each child their cup of soil, one seed, and a little water.

“Today we get to be planters in God’s garden! Take your seed and gently push it down into the soil about as deep as your fingernail. Now give it a small drink of water — just enough to make the soil feel like a damp sponge, not a puddle.”

As they plant, walk around and say things like: “Look how small that seed is compared to your hand! But God is going to do something incredible with it this week.” “Feel the soil — soft and ready for life. God made dirt that can help seeds grow!”

Closing

2 minutes

Every single day this week when you water your seed, I want you to whisper to yourself or to God: “We plant the seed… but only God makes it grow.” And remember — if God cares this much about a tiny seed, how much more does He care about you? He made you on purpose, and He’s helping you grow too!

Closing prayer

Lead the children, having them repeat after you.

Dear God,

Thank You for making tiny seeds that turn into beautiful flowers.

Thank You that You are the One who makes things grow.

Thank You that You grew me from a tiny seed too.

Help us remember that You care about us so much.

We love You. Amen.

Take-home sheet

What I learned

God is the One who makes things grow. We just plant the seed and take care of it!

Care for the sunflower

  • Keep the soil moist (like a wrung-out sponge)
  • Don’t let it dry out completely
  • Don’t drown it with too much water
  • Put it in a sunny spot

Verse to remember

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest… shall not cease.” — Genesis 8:22

My job this week

Water my seed every day and watch what God does!

Parent note

Help your child check their soil daily. It should feel like a damp sponge — not dry, not soaking wet.

Private to this device. Names of children stay with you — we do not send this anywhere.
