Lesson 03 · 15–20 minutes · 5–12 years
Why Are We All Different?
Supplies
- Children’s sunflower cups
Opening
2 minutesGather the kids in a circle.
“Last time we learned that God puts a special code called DNA inside every seed. Today we’re going to talk about something even more amazing — you! And how God made every single one of us completely different from everyone else in the whole world.”
Interactive Teaching
7–8 minutesAsk: “Look at the person next to you. Do they look exactly like you?”
“Does everybody know what it means to be unique? Let’s hear from a few of you — what does it mean when someone is unique?”
“Exactly! Unique means there’s only one like you in the whole world! Even though we all have two arms, two legs, two eyes, two ears, one nose, and one mouth, we all look different. That’s because God made each of us unique!”
“Remember from our first lesson? Just like you are planting a tiny sunflower seed, your mom and dad planted a tiny seed that God grew into YOU! God is the one making you grow — not just your parents. Isn’t that wonderful?”
“The Bible says we are all made in the image of God. That means we’re all special in a way that animals aren’t. But even though we’re all made in His image, God made each person completely different from everyone else. No two people in the whole world are exactly alike — not even twins!”
“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him.”
— Genesis 1:27
Hands-On Activity
4 minutesHave the kids look around at each other and notice how they’re all different — hair color, eye color, height, voices. Then have them take turns sharing one thing that makes them unique (or something they’re really good at).
Closing
2 minutesThere is only one you in the whole world. God made you because He loves you and He wants you to love Him back — just like you love your mom, your dad, or your brother and sister.
Closing prayer
Lead the children, having them repeat after you.
Dear God,
Thank You for Your special instructions for all life on earth.
Thank You for the amazing diversity of life — so many different birds, animals, plants, and people, each one unique and beautiful.
Thank You that just like mom and dad planted a seed that You grew into me, You are the one making me grow.
Thank You that You know the number of hairs on my head and knew me before I was born.
Help us to see how wonderfully You made each of us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Take-home sheet
What I learned
We all have two arms, two legs, two eyes, and one nose — but we all look different! God made each of us unique on purpose.
Care for the sunflower
- Keep watering your plant
- Your sunflower has been growing indoors and may need to be gradually moved outside
- Don’t put it straight into full, bright sunlight right away
Verse to remember
“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him.” — Genesis 1:27
My job this week
Thank God that He made you special and unique!
Parent note
Just like we don’t throw our children into the world all at once, we need to gradually get our sunflower used to full sunlight. Start by placing it outside for short periods and slowly increase the time.
